How to plan your first 88 days without panic
The biggest mistake many backpackers make is waiting too long, then accepting the first job that appears. A calmer plan usually works better.
Start with the area, not just the job
A job can sound good online, but the postcode, work type, season and proof matter. Before travelling, check whether the area is eligible and whether the work type actually matches the rules.
Ask proof questions early
Before saying yes, ask if you will receive payslips, a written agreement or contract, clear rosters and payment through bank transfer. If the employer avoids basic proof questions, be careful.
Do not move with zero backup
Regional work can involve waiting for shifts, weather delays or accommodation issues. Try to keep a money buffer for transport, food and at least one emergency move.
Use a simple weekly system
Every week, save your payslips, write down the dates worked, keep employer details and take screenshots of rosters or messages. Future you will be grateful when it is time to apply.
Before travelling for a job, search the postcode in the VisaRoute app, save the area, then compare it with nearby options. The goal is not only to find work, but to choose a place worth going to.
Today’s action
Pick one job ad you are considering and check three things: postcode, work type and proof. If one of those is unclear, ask questions before you move.
